Dysfunction & Incompetence
Both of these are considered ‘dirty words’ in business and in life. I have worked extensively with leaders and individuals who politely tip toe around their reality, and yet complain constantly about it.
So, what’s the big deal? People create dysfunction. People can be incompetent. It is not as though these are unchangeable conditions. Plus, we are human so dysfunction and incompetence are not only normal but to be expected. Our refusal to talk openly about their existence, about their being part of our reality, gives them so much power over us and our ability to achieve our potential.
Twenty-five years of working with leaders has made me an expert in dysfunction and incompetence at work. Being a successful entrepreneur has shone a bright light on my own dysfunctional habits and incompetence (yes, its true). Add to that a failed marriage and years spent navigating two teenagers through the school system, I am like a super magnet to dysfunction and incompetence.
But, all that experience has its benefits. I know the power that dysfunction and incompetence have to undermine personal and organizational success, however we define it.
